Have you seen that gift shop sign that says,“If you’re lucky enough to live at the beach, you’re lucky enough”? Well, after living two years on Pensacola Beach, I totally get that sentiment!
There’s so much to love here and lots of reasons to visit. Here are a few interesting facts;
Sugar white sand
Pensacola Beach has 18 miles of beautiful white sand. Locals here often call it “sugar white sand”. You’ll immediately notice that the sand isn’t brown or grey, like some coastal beaches. It’s indeed white!
Thank you Appalachian Mountains!
Not only is the sand white, but it’s sparkly! That’s because it’s made up of small pieces of quartz that traveled all the way down from the Appalachian Mountains to finally end up on our shores.
Did you hear that sound?
Some people say the sand makes a squeaky or barking sound when you walk on it.
One of the best beaches
Pensacola Beach consistently ranks as one of the best beaches in the United States. In fact, Trip Advisor ranks Pensacola Beach as one of the top 25 beaches in the U.S. in 2022. That’s quite an honor considering there are nearly 190 beaches in the state of Florida alone.
Amazing sunsets and sunrises
Everything comes to a halt and the iPhones come out every afternoon as beachgoers take pictures of our amazing sunsets. Once the sun goes down, the show doesn’t end there. Stick around a bit and you’ll see the sky glow with beautiful yellows and oranges, and if you’re lucky, some purple too. If you’re an early bird our sunrises will blow you away too!
That’s one big beach ball
The colorful beach ball water tower that you see near Casino Beach is no longer in use. It’s now a historical landmark so it’s staying put!
Be kind to the sea oats
Those sea oats growing on the dunes are vital to stabilizing the sand dunes—so much so that they’re protected and you’ll be fined if you disturb them in any way.
I hope that you get the chance to visit Pensacola Beach. Please let me know if you hear a barking sound while walking on the sparkly beach sand!
