Tacos Mexicanos has the Awesome Taco you’ve been searching for

Gabriel Hernandez knew that he wanted to put his restaurant experience to use by owning his own place one day. Just so happens that his place has wheels. He and his wife Gabriella Ramirez started Tacos Mexicanos food truck in 2016 at the Bridge Bar in Gulf Breeze, Florida.

They eventually found a permanent spot in East Hill at 3000 N, 12th Avenue. That’s where he went to work creating his versions of traditional Mexican favorites. When you spot the picnic tables with the red umbrellas, and of course the silver food truck, you’ve arrived.

The most popular item on the menu, and my favorite, is the Awesome Taco – corn tortilla, avocado, with your choice of meat, grilled onion, queso fresco, red onion and cilantro. I’ve think about ordering something different each time I go but the Awesome Taco is just so darn good! I love it with the Serrano hot sauce.

Hernandez says having a food truck presents some problems that brick and mortar restaurants don’t have to contend with, namely a cooler and storage space. There are cooler trailers behind the food truck to make sure everything is onsite and fresh.

Even though space is tight you’ll find a full menu of Mexican favorites, including burritos, burrito bowls, quesadillas, wraps and salads. Meat choices include, barbacoa, carne asada, chicken Tinga, carnitas, lingua. Vegans can choose between cauliflower or black beans.

Tacos Mexicanos is a perfect place to bring your kids. They’ll feel like they’re on a picnic as they dig into their tortilla chips and salsa. Dogs are welcome too.

As a husband and wife team working together, Gabriel and Gabriella (how cute are those names?) had to work in tight quarters, and there were challenges along the way. But as Gabriel told me, “If you can’t operate a business as a couple, maybe you shouldn’t be a couple.” It’s smooth sailing now and they’ve even teamed up with Perfect Plain, Garden & Grain as the exclusive food truck operator at their downtown location at 50 E.Garden St. Gabriel says the community is supportive of their small business and he sees great things in the growing Pensacola market.
